Project overview
As part of the wider refurbishment of Bamford & Co’s Ajax Works site in Stockport, Young & Company completed a specialist low-pitch roof conversion to the corridor and old office areas.
The existing roof arrangement comprised several connected low-pitch sections finished in different materials. The principal office and corridor areas were covered with ageing built-up felt, while a section adjoining the main industrial building had an existing profiled metal roof covering.
Rather than continuing to maintain the separate ageing roof finishes, the areas were refurbished and over-roofed using Young & Company’s own Royaldeck ‘S’ low-pitch standing seam roofing system.
The works brought the different roof areas together beneath a coordinated metal roof covering and included new Highline-type gutters, purpose-made fabricated flashings and purpose-made perimeter planking and wall cladding.
The existing roof
Mixed ageing roof coverings
Before refurbishment, the corridor and old office roof areas incorporated a mixture of built-up felt and profiled metal roof cladding.
The principal low-pitch roof was covered with an ageing felt system, while adjoining sections included separate felted areas and an existing profiled metal roof where the corridor connected with the main industrial building.
The different coverings created a fragmented roof arrangement with numerous junctions and interfaces between:
- Built-up felt roofs
- Profiled metal roof cladding
- Adjoining brick elevations
- Higher-level industrial buildings
- Windows and door openings
- Separate eaves and rainwater details
The project required a carefully detailed solution capable of covering the connected low-pitch roof areas and accommodating the existing building geometry.
The refurbishment challenge
Converting several roof areas into one coordinated system
The project involved more than simply replacing a single roof covering.
The existing corridor and office roofs consisted of several connected roof planes, different materials and complex interfaces with the surrounding industrial buildings.
The refurbishment solution therefore needed to:
- Accommodate the low roof pitches
- Cover both felted and profiled metal roof areas
- Resolve junctions with adjoining brick elevations
- Coordinate several interconnected roof planes
- Provide appropriate eaves and rainwater details
- Improve the overall appearance of the area
- Create a consistent roof finish across the complete corridor and office footprint
Royaldeck ‘S’ was selected as the specialist low-pitch metal roofing solution for the conversion.
Royaldeck ‘S’ roof conversion
A specialist standing seam solution for low-pitch roofs
Young & Company installed the Royaldeck ‘S’ standing seam roofing system over the corridor and old office roof areas.
Royaldeck ‘S’ is Young & Company’s own low-pitch, secret-fix metal roofing system. It is particularly suited to refurbishment and roof-conversion projects where ageing felt, membrane or profiled metal coverings require a more robust long-term solution.
The standing seam system uses concealed primary fixings, avoiding exposed fixing penetrations through the outer weathering sheet and creating a clean, coordinated external finish.
